The thing is they probably still both owe thousands, I doubt that 1250 even put a dent in what either of them owe. It appears that the states rules are that if you have an outstanding debt to the state, they take 50% of your lottery winnings or the full amount of your debt, whichever is less. So, I don’t think it got anywhere close to what was paid for on their behalf by the state, it is just a small effort by NY State to recoup some of their losses.

Yes, he did have a winfall and it is certainly unfair. However, that is what I meant by “clean hands doctrine”. Even if he gained an unfair advantage, the courts are unable to help the plaintiff if she herself is not playing straight. JJ had no choice in the matter, legally.
